Hello everyone, we have a full list of Free Workshops we will be offering beginning this week into December.  Our goal is to continue to provide our current members with knowledge and experience, and additionally to bring in our surrounding community and share what we do with them. We are proud of what we do because we know it improves lifestyle, our goal is to share it with our surrounding community. A #MassifAthlete shares her experience after 9 months of training with Massif Athletics. As a masters athlete, many times as I advanced in skills and increased barbell weights I seemed to get injured. That was when I contacted [Massif Athletics remote coach] Cori for help. From her initial assessment of me, she was able to identify many muscle imbalances and weaknesses contributing to my body not moving incorrectly and repeatedly getting injured. She then designed a very specific individual program to correct these issues, as well as move me forward as an athlete in all areas: strength, power, endurance, agility, flexibility, balance, and overall performance. Massif Athlete Rich Nicholes & The World’s Toughest Mudder Experience Written by Rich Nicholes In the most basic of explanations, my race was epic!  I did not accomplish a single goal, but I left everything I had on the course.   I had everything dialed in on my pre-race prep.   I put on a good 7 – 10 lbs (I never did a pre-race weight) in carb loading.  I was hydrated so well, I was peeing every 20 minutes prior to the race.  I carried a water bottle with me constant for 2 days prior.  I was as well rested as one would expect, given the late start time and pre-race jitters.  I pre-soaked in a hot tub and took epson salt baths.  My mind was focused.   I checked in on the Friday prior to race day and got my bib, credentials, and pit time.  It took about an hour of waiting in line before I got my bib.  When they handed me […]

Meet Erin Butler: Boston Marathoner, student, and one of the newest athletes joining the Massif Athletics family. Erin has been running marathons since her early years in college with a year spent on the Westminster cross-country team. She has run many half and full marathons including the New York marathon where she qualified for the Boston marathon. Six months prior to the race, Erin was sidelined by a knee injury. Not one to get discouraged, Erin joined Massif a month and a half ago with hopes that our individual programming design might change up her training routine and help her achieve her goals of running the Boston Marathon. During her time spent at Massif, Erin has experienced an improved range of motion and flexibility as well as strength in areas that she overlooked as she focused on running. Athlete’s Guide To Self-Preservation Burnout is part of being an athlete. But it doesn’t have to be. We outline what the three kinds of burnout athletes experience are, why they happen, and how you can prevent them. Read on to learn more. What Is Athlete Burnout? Burnout happens when athletes overtrain to the point becoming “broken.” In other words, their physiology, anatomy, and/or psychology no longer functions as they normally would. We explain what burnout looks like in each of these three systems. Physiology Your energy systems, including your endocrine and adrenal systems, are impaired. You experience loss of appetite, decreased quality of sleep, decreased performance in training or your sport, and body weight changes. These symptoms represent classic signs of overtraining. Anatomy Physical impairment comes from overuse injuries in your joints, muscles, and tendons. Your overused anatomy can’t sustain your training. During this time, you’re more likely to get injured. When skier Hailey Schiff joined the Massif team last August, she discovered a lot of imbalances. Like most elite skiers, she relied on her quad strength, which dominated over her hamstrings and glutes. As a result, she experienced chronic knee pain. Her Massif design sought to improve her structural balance and increase her physical resilience in preparation for the Subaru Freeride Series, the domestic big mountain competition series that qualifies skiers and snowboarders for the Freeride World Tour. “I spent a lot of time training at Massif going into the season,” Schiff explains. “I struggled with wanting being outside more, and trying to find the balance between being in the gym and being outside. It was kind of hard, but you have remember what you want to do. Gym time is mentally challenging–I love and hate it. But I also see results.” The SFS features two events at Snowbird and Telluride. The Subaru Freeride Series features the best competitive big mountain skiing and snowboarding in the United States. With three events at Snowbird, Telluride, and Big Sky, the series qualifies skiers and snowboarders for the international competitive big mountain circuit, Freeride World Tour. During each event, athletes drop into a 1,500-foot steep face covered with chutes and lined with cliffs. Judges award each athlete points according to the skier or rider’s line choice, fluidity, speed, airs and style. Big mountain skiing requires explosive power. Skiing fast and hard and landing cliff drops gives your posterior chain a beating. For Kitten Factory skier Cam Doane, his Massif Athletics program design built off his existing explosive power in order to reduce his fatigue.
